For the 2nd Industry Forum this year, it’s our pleasure to invite 3 international guests – Turkish film critic and scholar Janet Barış, Singapore International Film Festival general manager and film producer Jeremy Chua, and Australian Film and Television Development Director Bobby Romia – along with Hong Kong film producer Jacqueline Liu as the moderator, to discuss the latest trends in independent filmmaking across the globe.

According to Bobby, the Australian government has been committed to nurturing independent filmmakers by providing them with different kinds of financial support, but opportunities are still limited. This requires filmmakers to be creative in securing funding for their productions without solely relying on the government. Similarly, Janet mentioned that independent filmmakers in Turkey may face restrictions in seeking support, such as limited funding from the local government for political topics. Therefore, filmmakers exploring sensitive themes may have to seek alternative resources, such as support from European countries.

Drawing from his experience as an independent film producer in Singapore, Jeremy shared that collaborating with international partners can bring in more resources, which has been a common trend for filmmakers worldwide in recent years. However, this type of collaboration also has its considerations, such as potentially losing control over the film to a certain extent and having to do the production outside of their own country, which may require additional funding.

Lastly, the 3 guests encourage young filmmakers to stay curious about the world and never give up on expanding their network by attending film festivals, joining pitching programmes, or simply promoting themselves through social media. There are always opportunities for them to shine and gain recognition for their work globally.
