ECG2024 Review Industry Forum – In-Depth Talk with Julien Rejl: Why Do We Need to be Future-Oriented?

ECG2024

Date: 23 June, 2024 (Sun)
Guest Speaker:
Julien Rejl | Artistic Director, Directors’ Fortnight
Moderator:
Kiki Fung | Film Critic & Programmer

Following the first showcase of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selection, we were excited to have an in-depth talk with Julien Rejl, the Artistic Director of the Directors’ Fortnight, moderated by Hong Kong film critic and programmer Kiki Fung, at Hong Kong Art Centre.

The talk discussed observations on the ecosystem of film festivals, the phenomenon of “festival films”, how the Directors’ Fortnight makes their film selection for programme, and their effort to sustain their independence as a sidebar to the Cannes International Film Festival.

During the talk, Julien and Kiki discussed and dived deep into the Directors’ Fortnight’s spirit and experience to selecting and supporting singular, self-produced works that are outside of international financing networks, and those that take a different market approach. Julien also stated that he and his team are always open to all possibilities when programming films, and that he thinks the filmmakers’ view on cinema and their ability to use film languages to express themselves through cinema are the most important.

“Nowadays, there’s a lot of pressure around selecting a specific number of films made by female directors and directors of a certain nationality, and I think this somehow takes away cinema itself.” As stated by Julien, Directors’ Fortnight makes prospection around certain territories through robust research, but when it comes down to the shortlist, the quality of the film itself is the most significant thing. As the only non-competitive selection in the Cannes Film Festival, the Directors’ Fortnight values nothing but the honesty, authenticity, and the “truth” that the filmmakers have put into their art, regardless of the choice of topic, gender and nationality. Concluding the talk with Julien’s perspective on being “future-oriented” for a film festival is to always “stay open to what is impossible to anticipate”.
