From Lover’s Discourse to Better Days, our ECG 2024 Ambassador Dir. Derek Tsang remarkably has gone from being a nominee for the Golden Horse Awards to one for the Oscars in just a decade. Then in recent years, he switched his course onto Netflix, co-directing 3 Body Problem series, garnering audiences worldwide. Only in his mid-40s, Derek surely still has miles to go, and much good work to be anticipated. We are honoured to invite Derek to share with us his path in filmmaking up till this point – how did his experience of nine years taking different roles in the industry inform his work as a director? How to survive the shifting trends of the local film industry while maintaining creative innovation? What was it like to be under the international spotlight? Where and what is the future of Hong Kong film?

從《戀人絮語》到《少年的你》，本屆ECG2024大使曾國祥導演僅用了十年時間，由金馬獎走到奧斯卡金像獎，成績亮麗奪目。近年他轉戰國際串流平台Netflix（網飛），聯合執導了劇集《三體》，成為城中熱話。今年只有四十多歲的曾國祥，前途可謂無可限量。這次我們邀請他與觀眾分享從影至今的心路歷程——在電影圈不同崗位打滾了九年才執導首部長片，對作為導演的身份有甚麼影響？而踏入千禧年代，坊間常言香港電影逐漸從黃金年代轉型，他是如何成功生存下來之餘，更屢作新嘗試？踏足國際又是怎樣的經驗？最後當然我們會靈魂拷問曾導演：香港電影的未來在哪裡？我們該如何走下去？

With the surging popularity of various online streaming platforms, global filmmakers seek to shift their courses by trying new ways of storytelling, innovative formats and advanced technologies. When genre films are no longer the mainstream, and stories with local flavours receive more attention, how do independent filmmakers around the world respond to this change? We have invited three international guests from Turkey, Australia and Singapore to share their insights about the ecology of independent films in their countries. Furthermore, as the audience becomes more familiar with film production, they grow aware that a successful film requires more than just the director’s creativity and talent – the contribution by its producers, production crew, film critics, and festival programmers are just as important. The panel will also share with us filmmaking tactics they came across in recent years, and discuss the future trends of independent filmmaking.

在串流平台大肆流行的支持下，全球電影創作人均各出奇招：不單要拍出舉世無雙的故事，更要追求形式及科技等的新嘗試。當類型不再是主流，地方特色反而變得獨到，各地的獨立電影創作者又是如何回應這個時代？有見及此，奪目影像邀請三位來自土耳其、澳洲及新加坡的國際嘉賓，為大家分享當下三地獨立電影的風景。值得留意的是，當大家對電影製作越來越熟悉，便知道除了導演的靈感及才華外，一部成功電影的背後，往往也有監製、製作部門、影評人、電影節等各方面的推動。三位嘉賓也將分享他們近年遇上的突圍奇招，以及對獨立電影未來發展趨勢的分析。

To discover new directors and traverse the narrow path of exploring new film languages, the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight has always been true to its original mission: to nurture creatives with ground breaking insights for over 50 years. We are honoured to have Julien Rejl, the Artistic Director of Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, for his participation at ECG2024. In addition to chairing the jury of the Asian New Director Competition, Julien has also selected four short films from the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 2023. He will share with us his insights on the importance of the “future” – how do filmmakers visualise the future in their works? What makes creatives from Asia stand out? 

革新者重視的從來都是找到抱持相同信念的同路人。在挖掘新銳導演、探索新的影像語言這條窄路上，康城導演雙週一直貫徹執行其初衷，50多年來孕育了許多劃時代的創作者。今年奪目榮幸邀請到康城導演雙週的藝術總監朱利安·雷傑參與ECG，除了擔任亞洲新導演獎的評審團主席外，亦特選了四部入圍2023年康城導演雙週的短片及出席座談會，與觀眾分享為甚麼「未來」那麼重要？對他來說作品如何體現未來性？亞洲地區的創作人又有甚麼值得留意的地方？
