Synopsis 故事大綱
A tiny 1,000 square foot shelter operating in crowded Hong Kong cares for its residents – migrant domestic workers in crisis. We start with the story of Yuli. She is an Indonesian domestic worker and a resident of the shelter who is fighting her “first fight” for migrants’ rights: that is, her own right to continue working in Hong Kong after encountering visa troubles.
We transition to a huge crowd of migrants in New York as they stage a rally outside the Summit of the Future at the United Nations. Indonesian migrant leader and former domestic worker, Eni Lestari takes the stage and speaks about the need for grassroot migrants to advocate for themselves.
The film transitions back to Hong Kong focusing on a cultural performance. Jovie – a Filipino domestic worker – comes into focus as she performs in a political drama highlighting the rights’ violations of migrant workers from the Philippines.
The film connects these three characters, their fights for migrants’ rights, and their origins in the Bethune House Migrant Women’s Refuge.

Director’s Statement 導演闡述
Growing up as a Filipino immigrant in the US, I struggled with what it meant to fit into the dominant society. I thought making a difference in the world was related to how much money and influence a person had. Over the past five years, my vision of what it means to make a difference in the world has been transformed by time spent with migrant women activists in Hong Kong. Despite their lack of money and privilege, they fight to make the world a better place – not only for their own families, but for all migrants.
In my first documentary Migrant Women Rise, I focused on the specifics of domestic worker activism among Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong. In this second film, I follow the same observational filmmaking approach which allows me to show the intimate details of the characters’ lives, while also platforming their voices and perspectives. This film also expands its scope to focus on migrant advocates within and beyond Hong Kong – including both Indonesians and Filipinos at various stages in their trajectories of leading social change.
作為一個在美國長大的菲律賓裔移民,我曾經掙扎如何融入所謂的主流社會。我曾認為改變世界這事與一個人擁有多少金錢和影響力有關。然而,在過去的五年裡,隨著與在香港的女性移工社運領袖接觸,我對如何改變世界的想法產生了轉變。儘管她們缺乏金錢和特權,她們仍然在努力讓世界變得更美好;她們不僅為了自己的家庭,也為了所有移工。

Francis Catedral is a documentary filmmaker and Masters of Divinity graduate. As a Filipino-American seeking to understand and combat the injustices associated with migration, he has welcomed the opportunity to work closely with the migrant domestic worker-led organisations he has met since moving to Hong Kong in 2018. His first film is Migrant Women Rise.

Lydia Catedral
Lydia Catedral is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Translation at the City University of Hong Kong. Her research is on language and migration. She has done research and solidarity work with the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body and other migrant-led organisations in Hong Kong since 2018. She is Francis‘ spouse, and they collaborate on a number of projects.
香港城市大學語言學與翻譯系助理教授,主力研究語言與移民。自2018 年起,她一直與亞洲移民協調委員會和其他由移民主導的在港組織進行合作與研究工作。她是 Francis 的配偶,並在數個項目上一同合作。

Sringatin
Sringatin is an Indonesian migrant domestic worker and has been a labour activist in Hong Kong since 2003. She is the chairperson of the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union (IMWU) and spokesperson for the Asian Migrants Coordinating Body (AMCB). In 2014, Sringatin was named one of Top 10 Local Heroes for South China Morning Post (SCMP).
Sringatin 是印尼外籍家庭傭工,自2003年起一直在香港參與的移民工運動。她是印尼移民工人聯盟(IMWU)主席和亞洲移民協調機構(AMCB)發言人。 2014年,Sringatin 被《南華早報》評為十 大本地英雄之一。

Sonia Wong 黃鈺螢
Sonia Wong teaches Gender Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. She founded Reel Women Hong Kong in 2013 and the first Women’s Festival in Hong Kong with Eaton HK and Sally Coco in 2018. She also works extensively with the migrant community including serving on the committee of Migrants Pride and as a board member of Bethune House.
香港中文大學性別研究講師,於2013年創立了女影香港,並於 2018 年與香港逸東酒店及Sally Coco 共同創辦了香港首屆婦女節。她亦與移工群體合作,包括任職於移工同志遊行委員會,並擔任白恩逢之家董事會成員。

Joyous Prim
Joyous Prim, a United Methodist Deaconess focuses on addressing injustices faced by Filipino migrant workers in Hong Kong and the USA throughout the migration process. Since returning to Hong Kong in 2020, she has collaborated closely with migrant domestic-led organisations, and having learned Tagalog to enhance her engagement. Joyous worked alongside Francis as a co-producer of Migrant Women Rise.
