Logline 故事摘要
While rehearsing for her semi-autobiographical play, a British-born Chinese director battles writer’s block and a looming deadline, all while unravelling the decade-long trauma of abandonment by her mother. Soon, the lines between reality and the stage start to blur.
華裔戲劇導演藍在排練她的半自傳戲劇期間,面臨無法寫出故事結尾的困境,導致她過去十五年的創傷被揭開,現實與虛構之間的界限開始模糊。

Synopsis 故事大綱
Blue, a British-born-Chinese theatre writer/performer, rehearses a semi-autobiographical play adapted from the Chinese Opera Wanli Yuan (Reunion), depicting a woman’s search for her lost mother. Struggling with writer’s block and deadline pressure from producer Mei, Blue’s trauma of abandonment resurfaces, hindering her creativity.
Blue devises a pivotal scene where the protagonist encounters a tiger, symbolising rebirth, but hesitates over the nudity requirement during rehearsal. Despite considering alternatives, she remains without a satisfactory ending as time elapses.
Mei returns to demand to know why the play is still unfinished. This prompts Blue’s outburst, accusing Mei of never trying to understand her, never caring for her, and deserting the project at a key point – the same things she blames her mother for.
Back in the greenroom alone, Blue strangely hears her mother’s voice echoing from the stage throughout the backstage, revealing her reasons for leaving. Pursuing the voice, Blue faces the tiger again backstage, she understands she must be prepared to bare herself physically to embrace the innocence and purity of a newborn.
Onstage, Blue finds closure with her waiting mother, completing the ending as they finally reunite.

英國長大的華裔戲劇作家藍,正在排練一部改編自昆曲《萬里圓》的半自傳戲劇,講述一個女人尋找自己失散母親的旅程,排練過程中喚醒了藍十五年前被母親遺棄的創傷和憤怒。
劇中主角遇到一隻攔路虎,要她赤身裸體方可通過。然而在排練時,藍開始對自己的裸露感到猶豫。創作滯後令製片人梅感到失望,她指責藍固執而不負責任,並表示她將投身其他項目。再次面臨被遺棄,藍將自己對母親的控訴投射到梅身上。
藍獨自回到休息室,後台監視器突然傳出母親的聲音,講述自己過去的孤獨和痛苦。藍想去見她但被老虎擋住去路,藍這次敞開心扉,表達自己的想念和憤怒,她逐漸褪去衣服。
藍赤裸著在舞台上醒來,她的母親正坐在觀眾席上,她們在劇院裡團聚了。

Director’s Statement 導演闡述
Snow, Tiger, Reunion is a VR film exploring the complexities of mother-daughter relationship and family trauma within a multicultural context, from a contemporary and feminist perspective. I wish to address the underrepresentation and oversimplification of East-Asian women in English speaking cinema, while exploring universal themes of generational and cultural tension.
The story is heavily inspired by my experience as an Asian immigrant woman with a multicultural background. Home, multiculturalism and intimate relationships are recurring themes in my work. As a writer and director, I view creation as a process of self-discovery and self-reconciliation: the protagonist’s journey mirrors my own creative process and struggles, struggles that I believe many creative women face. I also wish to depict nudity in a feminist, non-erotic context, further challenging the objectification of Asian women, using it as a metaphor for re-birth and new beginnings.

《大雪、老虎、萬裡圓》是一部在多元文化背景下,從當代女性主義的視角探索母女關係和家庭創傷複雜性的VR / 沉浸式電影。我希望以作品關注海外一代及二代華僑這一龐大群體目前的生活處境,探索他們獨特的代際衝突和多元文化矛盾。
故事概念來自我的多元文化背景及亞裔移民女性的經歷。我過去的作品中,家庭、多元文化衝突和親密關係一直是被反覆探討的主題。作為一名編劇和導演,我將創作視為自我發現及自我和解的過程:故事主人公戲劇導演藍的經歷反映了我的創作過程和掙扎,我相信這是許多從事創意領域工作的女性都會面臨的困境。同時我亦希望以女性主義的、非色情的方式描繪和討論裸露,進一步挑戰西方電影對亞洲女性的物化,以「主動的裸露」隱喻重生和全新開始。

A filmmaker and moving image artist based in London, Zhao is a member of BAFTA Connect. Her films traverse both fiction and non-fiction, delving into a diverse range of storytelling while emphasising authentic, nuanced female characters navigating complex intimate relationships. Her recent films have been selected for prestigious film festivals including Visions du Reel, Cannes La Cinef, Slamdance, Naraiff…

Hong Kong-Dutch producer, her multicultural background allows a practice that explores nuanced identities rooted in Asian heritage. Through her work at the CinemAsia Film Festival, she seeks to understand and embrace these intricacies, facilitating the cross-border exposure of Asian films beyond Asia. Mentored by well-known producers Jia Zhao, Lorna Tee, and Doris Yeung, and drawing from her experience in TV and film productions, Helen loves bringing to life stories that lie in the shadows of humanity.

Estella is a writer, critic, and film scholar pursuing a Ph.D. at Cambridge. Her current research focuses on myth, womanhood, and space in French cinema, with a special interest in nostalgia. Specifically, she explores how female protagonists seek a sense of home and establish their subjectivities within cinematic spaces.
